Who We Are

How we work

SBLF is a philanthropic, science-based foundation with roots in the Seattle biotech community. We are a diverse, interdisciplinary community of people who collectively offer our financial resources, talent and expertise and embrace a culture of collaboration in our work. We focus our efforts in the Puget Sound region but aim for broader impact. We invite participation and contributions of all kinds.

SBLF provides funding, volunteers and expertise in support of projects and programs that:

* Explore and elucidate links between human health and the health of the planet and its environment.

* Provide opportunities for individuals or organizations to expand scientific awareness, literacy and inquiry skills.

* Address root causes and focus on opportunities for systemic change.
* Bring together people and organizations with diverse perspectives and expertise to address complex problems.

History

SBLF was first conceived as a philanthropic organization in early 2002 by a group of fifteen Immunex employees who wanted to contribute to the Puget Sound community by giving of their professional skills and financial resources. Set up as a Donor Advised Fund, the organization was formally named Seattle Biotech Legacy Foundation in 2003. We started to award grants in the same year and the annual science seminar series in 2004. For more information on the history of SBLF, click here.

Board

The SBLF Board is a working board. In addition to assuming basic responsibilities of the Board, SBLF Board members actively participate in operation of the organization. For example, every Board member serves as a chairperson of a committee or leads a major activity of the organization. For more information on the Board, click here.

Scientific Advisory Group

SBLF has convened a Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) led by David Cosman to provide expert scientific opinions relevant to human health, the environment and sustainability. Among the specific areas we cover are public health, climate change, ecosystems biology, energy and environmental economics. The SAG informs many aspects of SBLF's work including grant making, seminar topics, new programs and conference planning. For current SAG members and backgrounds, click here. We will be adding more members in the months ahead.

Staff

Nora Burton joined SBLF as Operations and Program Manager in December 2007. She has spent the past seven years working in the non-profit sector; the last three of which have been in the philanthropic field. Nora is an active volunteer and currently contributes her time as a Wildlife Care Assistant at PAWS. She holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Washington.
